The Literary Hill Series, also called the Jiang Xingxi Rare Collection Series, was compiled by Jiang Xingxi during China’s Republican era. Having collected a significant number of rare books, Xingxi painstakingly assembled epigraphs and other elements into editions that could be published using contemporary moveable type presses. He also established a name for himself as a publisher of monographs from his collection. Named for the Literary Garden he created in his home, the collection became known as the Literary Hill Series. In total, four collections of 28 subjects from 168 scrolls were printed. Among these are the well-known Qing Dynasty masterpieces of book collectors, including A Collection of Sishi Studio, Yiyun Library Bibliographies of the Song and Yuan Dynasties, Biexia Painting and Calligraphy Record, Chijing Library Record, Tiehan Epilogue, Diaogu Tower Collection, and Zhisheng Dao Epilogue. This collection was originally published in the 13th year of the Republican period (1924). At that time it was sold in Japan, Europe and America, and was held in great esteem by many book collectors, but has been unavailable since then. This version of the collection is a reproduction of the original moveable type edition, which served as the master copy of the original.

This special collection was compiled by Pan Shicheng, also known as Deyu, who was from the Fanyu county of Guangdong. He served as the director of the Ministry of Defense and was famous for his library at his private villa, Haishanxianguan (Sea Hill House), which was home to his private collection of literary works. From that collection, Pan selected and compiled these outstanding masterpieces into the “Hanshanxianguan Collection,” consisting of 56 works ranging from the Tang and Song Dynasties to the Ming and Qing Dynasties. The books contained within the collection cover a broad range of subjects including geography, medicine, ancient gunsmithing, military strategy, and Chinese and foreign literature. Significantly, the collection also includes rare and notable texts on mathematics. Finally, a number of these volumes were engraved during the Daoguang and Xianfeng Emperor periods in Fan Yu.

The Shi Ji (Historic Records) is a collection of 130 works written by Sima Qian. The collection spans 3,000 years of Chinese history, with detailed records from the legendary Yellow Emperor down to the first year of Yuanshou in Xihan period. A masterpiece that took 18 years to produce, the Shi Ji deals with major events and personalities, comprising 130 chapters and totaling more than 520,000 words. The Shi Ji was not only the first general history of its kind attempted in China, but it was also a model used for dynastic histories in subsequent times. As a result, the Shi Ji was widely circulated in ancient China. Throughout the years, scholars often added annotations, the most influential of which are known as the “three notes” by Pei Yin ("Shiji Jijie”), Sima Zhen ("Shiji Suoyin" in Tang Dynasty), and Zhang Shoujie ("Shiji Zhengyi" in Tang Dynasty). The earliest inscribed edition of The Shi Ji is the Chunhua Edition from the Song dynasty (in 994), but this has been lost to history. This edition of Fourteen Lines Song Engraved - Historic Records originates from the earliest version of the collection, making it an exciting addition to the scholarship of ancient China.

The monumental Zizhi Tongjian (“Comprehensive Mirror for Aid in Government”), a general chronicle of Chinese history, is considered one of the finest single historical works in Chinese. Compiled by Sima Guang, who was known for his scholarship in several disciplines and prominence in government, this collection chronologically narrates the history of China in the period from the Warring States to the Five Dynasties (403 BC-959 CE). In writing these works, Sima Guang departed from the traditional methods of Chinese historiography. For almost 1,000 years the Shiji (standard Chinese dynastic histories) primarily divided chapters between annals of rulers and biographies of officials. This collection changed the format of these from a biographical style to a chronological style. According to Endymion Porter Wilkinson, "It had an enormous influence on later Chinese historical writing, either directly or through its many abbreviations, continuations, and adaptations. It remains an extraordinarily useful first reference for a quick and reliable coverage of events at a particular time."
